Im US Bundesstaat Kalifornien befindet sich das beliebte Reiseziel San Francisco das bekannt ist durch die Golden Gate Bridge. Ungefähr 4,3 Millionen Menschen leben im Großraum von San Francisco und es gibt jede Menge zu sehen. Es ist eher eine hügelige Stadt im Norden Kaliforniens, die an der Spitze einer Halbinsel zwischen dem Pazifik und der Bucht von San Francisco liegt. Die Stadt ist berühmt für ihren ganzjährigen Nebel, die legendäre Golden Gate Bridge sowie ihre Straßenbahnen und bunten viktorianischen Häuser. Die in der Bucht gelegene Insel Alcatraz war einst eine berüchtigte Gefängnisinsel. Was sollte man sich beim ersten Besuch unbedingt angucken und wie kommt man am besten dort hin ?

Eine Fahrt mit den Cable Cars
Die bekannten Cable Cars gehören zu San Francisco wie das Kolloseum zu Rom. Momentan sind noch drei Linien im Betrieb und zwar The Powell-Hyde (Linie 60), The Powell-Mason (Linie 59) und The California Street (Linie 61). Am besten ist es wenn man am östlichen Ende des Fisherman’s Wharf einsteigt um eine Rundfahrt zu machen. Allerdings möchten dort immer viele Touristen mitfahren und man muß mit einer Wartezeit von ca. 30 Minuten rechnen (kleiner Tipp: Ab China Town kann man einfach ohne Wartezeit dazusteigen) Viele Sehenswürdigkeiten kann man mit den Cable Cars erreichen und sicherlich kennt man die Cable Cars aus verschiedenen Hollywood Filmen und zahlreichen Postkarten. Eine Fahrt mit den San Francisco Cable Cars kostet ungefähr 8 US-Dollar pro Strecke. Für alle, die noch die Geschichte der Cable Cars ergründen wollen, bietet sich das Museum an.
TIPP: mit dem CITY PASS könnt ihr so oft mit den Cable Cars fahren wie ihr wollt.

Pier 39 & Fisherman’s Wharf
Ein Teil von Fisherman’s Wharf ist das Pier 39 das eine ehemalige Bootsanlegestelle war und heute eine beliebte Touristenattraktion in San Francisco ist. Es gibt dort einen ganzjährigen Rummel, Souvenir Shops, Fahrgeschäfte, Restaurants und das Aquarium of the Bay. Vom Financial Distrikt kann man gerne entlang der Promenade bis zum Pier 39 laufen (Dauert knapp 30 Minuten) oder mit der Strassenbahn wenige Station fahren (ca. 8 Minuten). Wer den CITY PASS hat, kann hier einige Attraktionen, wie das Aquarium umsonst besuchen. Für den Besuch am Pier sollte man schon 3-5 Stunden einplanen, sofern noch eine Tour mit dem Boot dazu kommt. Auch die berühmte Belichtung zum Alcatraz Gefängnis kann man von her aus starten. TIPP: Hier im Voraus buchen, da die Touren sehr beliebt sind und oftmals am gleichen Tag bereits ausgebucht sind. Ihr findet auch anderen Touren mit dem Boot, die nur knapp 1-2 Stunden dauern und stündlich verkehren. Diese sind meist bis zur Golden Gate Brücke und entlang der Küste auch sehr sehenswert.

Das Aquarium of the Bay ist ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel in San Francisco für Familien mit Kindern. Es befindet sich gleich neben dem berühmten Pier 39 und dem Hard Rock Cafe San Francisco in Fisherman`s Wharf. Sehr interessant sind dort natürlich die über 50 Haie die in den Aquarien und Tunneln herumschwimmen. Ein Ticket kostet für Erwachsene Personen ungefähr 16,95 US-Dollar und für die Kinder 10,00 US-Dollar. Was macht man noch am Pier 39 ? Einfach wie alle Touristen gemütlich die Souvenisshops besichtigen, sich in ein Restaurant setzen und das leckere Essen geniessen. Tatsächlich ist die Auswahl der Restaurants und Snack Imbisse sehr groß, mit leerem Magen solltet ihr hier nicht hinkommen.

Das bunte Treiben in China Town
Eine der größten Chinatowns in den USA ist sicherlich die Chinatown in San Francisco, die man einmal besuchen sollte. Sie ist eine beliebte Sehenswürdigkeit in San Francisco wo heute rund 80.000 Chinesen leben. Man könnte meinen man befindet sich in China und nicht in San Francisco (nicht ganz) . Es sieht alles so aus wie in China mit Chinesischen Schriftzeichen, Restaurants und Geschäften. Die Chinatown von San Francisco reicht im Westen bis zur Powell Street und bis zum Nob Hill, im Osten bis zur Kearny Street, im Norden bis zum North Beach. Ich habe mir zwar viel mehr Restaurants als Souvenir Shops vorgestellt und gewünscht, aber hungrig muss hier keiner gehen. Für mich ist der Besuch von China Town eigentlich immer mit leckerem Essen verbunden und die Dumplings sind hier nicht schwer zu finden. Preise vergleichen lohnt sich nicht wirklich, da alle Betreiber in der gleichen Preisklasse spielen. Auch bei den Souvenirs kann man wenig Unterschiede bei den Preisen finden. Im Prinzip könnt ihr den Spaziergang durch China Town auf ca. 1 Stunde (mit Essen ectl auch zwei Stunden) begrenzen.
TIPP: Wenn ihr etwas gefunden habt, was euch gefällt – kauft es gleich – es wird nicht günstiger oder besser.

Die Golden Gate Brücke & Aussichtspunkte
Die „Golden Gate Bridge“ ist nicht nur das Wahrzeichen der Stadt, sondern auch der USA. Die 2.727 Meter lange Hängebrücke befindet sich am Eingang zur Bucht von San Francisco. Dabei verbindet sie die Stadt mit dem „Marin County“ sowie den „Napa- und Sonoma-Valley“. Auf der Brücke befinden sich sechs Fahrspuren sowie zwei Geh- und Radwege. Ein Besuch der Stadt ohne ein Foto der Golden Gate Bridge wäre schon fast ein verbrechen. Wie kommt ihr am besten dort hin und welcher Aussichtspunkt ist der beste ?
Erste Möglichkeit : Vom Pier 39 mit dem Boot genau unter der Brücke durchfahren und mal einen ganz anderen Blickwinkel erleben. Die Fahrt dauert hier knapp 1 Stunde und ist zwar nicht sonderlich spektakulär, aber trotzdem sehenswert. Unbedingt warm anziehen, da in Richtung der Brücke eine stärkere Briese weht und es deutlich kühler auf dem Boot ist, als an der Küste. Kosten = ca. 10 $
Zweite Möglichkeit: Baker Beach – dieses Strand mit einer wirklich sehr schönen Aussicht erreicht ihr am besten mit der Bus Linie 29 – dazu einfach bis zum Ende der 25th Avenue fahren. Am Ende ist zwar ein Schild, welches euch den Weg weist, jedoch habe ich einen kleinen Tipp: einfach gerade aus weiterlaufen und ihr kommt in eine idyllische Wohnanlage. Von hier aus könnt ihr durch die Tür im Zaun runter zum Strand. Schaut kurz bei Google Maps rein und ihr werdet das Ende der Strasse und den Eingang sehr schnell finden.
Dritte Möglichkeit: Fort Point – Golden Gate Welcome Center – von hier aus könnte ihr verschiedene Wege nehmen und die Brücke am südlichen Ende von oben und teilweise von unten fotografieren. Das ist schon fast der Klassiker unter den Aussichtspunkten und auch mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln aus Downton in 30 Minuten gut erreichbar.
Vierte Möglichkeit (es gibt noch mehr): Battery Spencer (der Top Aussichtspunkt). Hier macht es Sinn entweder vom Süden direkt mit dem Fahrrad über die Brücke zu fahren (Kosten pro Tag für ein Fahrrad ca. 35$) oder mit dem Auto bis Sausalito (die Abfahrt) zu fahren. Hier ist alles sehr gut ausgeschildert. In der Hochsaison wird es nur mit den Parkplätzen etwas eng. Von hier aus ist der Weg zum Aussichtspunkt nur wenige Meter entfernt. Auch hier habt ihr mehrere Varianten zur Verfügung, denn ihr könnt noch etwas weiter nach oben fahren/laufen und die Brücke aus einer etwas weiteren Perspektive fotografieren.
Tipp: Den Aussichtspunkt am Battery Spencer oder Fort Point zum Sonnenuntergang bzw. ab 18 Uhr, wenn der knallig blaue Himmel weg ist, besuchen. Die Golden Gate Brücke hüllt sich oft in Nebel ein.
Ich hatte leider etwas Pech mit dem Wetter und daher ist das Foto vom Baker Beach und Battery Spencer nicht so ganz, wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe. Lasst euch bitte davon nicht beeindrucken.

Painted Ladies & Golden Gate Park
Diese beiden Attraktionen lassen sich gut verbinden. Zuerst zum Alamo Square , der zu den beliebtesten Parks San Franciscos zählt. Er liegt zwischen der Hayes-, Steiner-, Fulton- und Scott Street. Von hier aus hat man einen tollen Ausblick auf die bunten viktorianischen Häuserreihen. Der Kontrast zwischen der kleinen Parkanlage, den Painted Ladies und den Wolkenkratzern im Hintergrund ist überwältigend. Das beste Licht um die Schönheit der bunten Häuser einzufangen ist nachmittags, wenn das Licht der untergehenden Sonne die Häuserreihe beleuchtet. Von hier aus mit dem Bus bis zum Eingang des Golden Gate Parks. Für diesen Park sollte man jedoch mehrere Stunden einplanen. Deutlich größer als der Central Park in New York – der Golden Gate Park erstreckt sich über fünf Kilometer von Ost nach West und über 800 Meter von Nord nach Süd. Ich bin gelaufen und habe daher natürlich nur einen Bruchteil gesehen. Viele Museen und Sehenswürdigkeiten befinden sich im Golden Gate Park: Conservatory of Flowers, Botanical Garden, de Young Museum, Asian Art Museum und California Academy of Sciences. Für eine dieser Sehenswürdigkeiten muss man jedoch Eintritt bezahlen (der Eintritt in den Park ist kostenfrei. Ein beliebter Ort um sich in dem Golden Gate Park zu entspannen ist der Japanese Tea Garden. Es ist der älteste japanisch Garten der Vereinigten Staaten. Für eine kleine Aktivität bietet der See auch einen Verleih von Trett- und Ruderbooten.

Fazit & Tipps
Ich habe nicht alle Sehenswürdigkeiten in 3 Tagen geschafft (eher 2,5), da die Anbindung mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln deutlich anders ist, als ich es gewohnt bin. Die Bushaltestellen sind nicht immer sofort sichtbar und man muss sich zunächst mit den Linien vertraut machen. Mit einem Mietwagen ist es eindeutig einfacher und schneller und für die nächste Reise stehen dann folgende weitere tolle Sehenswürdigkeiten auf der Liste : Twin Peaks , Presidio, Lombard Street, Alcatraz, Bay Bridge und Baker Beach bei besserem Wetter.
Eine Unterkunft findet sich für jeden Geldbeutel. Empfehlenswert ist es ein zentrales Hotel zu buchen, welches in Downtown liegt – nähe China Town am besten, denn von hier hat man den besten Ausgangspunkt. Für San Francisco sind 4 Tage schon notwendig, um die meisten Sehenswürdigkeiten sehen zu können.
