Makumu Game Lodge – Safari Holidays near Krüger National Park!
Three days in the Makumu Game Lodge near the Kruger National Park with the best impressions i ever made and even some tears at the end.
My stay in the Makumu Game Lodge and the Safari experience I will never forget in my life and each photo will remember me everytime of an exciting and loving time. Why ? What happened ?…
The Lodge is located in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve near the Kruger National Park and is is about 1 hour from Hoedspruit idyllic airport away. You will be picked up with a proper safari carat the airport. Chris and his wife Janet are working at the Lodge for several years and they were very sympathetic at first glance .
On the way to the lodge you can already enjoy the park and look forward to the coming days . The Lodge is situated higher on a hillside from which you have a very good view of the reserve . The first impression upon arrival makes me really speechless when I enter my room , or rather enter my house .

The house has two large bedrooms ( 1x double bed 1x 2 single beds ) , each with a private terrace and bathroom . I have decided for the room with a double bed . ” Unfortunately only 2 days … “
I have a terrace with a private hammock …
And a second terrace with two comfortable chairs with a perfect view of the reserve . The next day I would have some cute visitors here… I left the room to see the rest of the Lodge, which is really huge and impressive.

The main house is divided into two floors and a separate area for a delicious evening barbecue . On the first floor there is a large room with comfortable sofas and a large dining table, which is located near the kitchen . Everything is beautifully and stylish decorated in a safari look and many details such as images , figures and tablecloths which harmonize perfectly with the Lodge interior . On the first floor there are two terraces which offer a beautiful view of the reserve or the natural pool on each side .
That’s the cozy BOMA deck where we enjoyed the first evening and a delicious meal . At night you can then sit here by the fire and listen to the animal sounds and let pass the experience revue .
On the back of the deck there is also a large dining table and on the right side an open large barbecue . Nothing is missing here for a perfect evening in nature . The second floor features a cozy fireplace room also with two terraces , a game of chess and a pool table .
On the day of arrival , it felt like 40 degrees in the shade ( actually it was 35 degrees ) , so I was happy to see a beautiful pool , which is stylishly bordered with stones and has plenty of space to relax . From the pool you can also observe the entire area well and occasionally some Elephants drinking from the drain water .
From above , you can now see my house – the yellow top of the image with the terrace and hammock . After exploring the Lodge , it was time for bed and the unexpected animal noises at night … has this been elephant or lions ?
DAY 1 – Game drive – Start – 6 am
On time at 5:45 am , fresh coffee was already prepared so we were ready for the first start of our adventure . You can you possibly imagine how excited and happy I was , because so far I ‘ve seen ” wild” animals only in the zoo .
We are 4 people – Philip , sitting in the front of the car here and carefully pays attention to everything , Eric , who is in my team and of course, our ranger , Chris .
Philip always sitting in the front and pays attention to every sound and every movement . With the open jeep we are cruising for the first 15 minutes through the park .
And here I am ready for capturing some animals ( Still smiling, as i dint know that time what i would see here) . It does not take too long until the first herd of antelopes is crossing the road – they are very fast but also very shy .
Luckily the giraffe is enjoying the leaves and kept an eye on us.
The giraffe is pretty close and it seems as she is waiting for us to finish taking pictures . After few minutes a herd of bulls is crossing our way. Somehow i wasn’t even nervous at all to see them that close and starring at us.
Actually, I should have been afraid at this time as they have huge horns and can be very fast. Some Zebras crossed few minutes later the path, but they have been very fast and shy – even though i managed to make this picture.
After 90 minutes we stopped for a short break with a small table and some coffee. Slowly i am realizing that i am really here and saw those animals.
Its around 8am, partly cloudy but already very hot at this morning . So far, everything was very peaceful and beautiful …. On the way back to the lodge we came across more antelopes, zebras and some elephants which we could just hear, but not see. But we would see them very soon on the next game drive. It is a very special feeling when you realize that all the animals are free and you are just a small part of the nature.
DAY 1 – Lodge – 9am
I arrived at the lodge with thousand feelings of happiness after the first drive as was also looking forward for the first breakfast. Your will be spoiled here with delicious food and if thats not enough you can feel free to grab some food and drinks all the time by your own from the kitchen. The breakfast was prepared so lovely and with self made delicious bread and many tasty fruits too.

There is a large bowl of fruits from passion fruit , strawberries , kiwi , pineapple , etc. , a slice of bread with ham , a pancake with strawberry jam , fresh orange juice and coffee . The day couldn’t start better. As we had some time till lunch and ist was pretty hot i decided to refresh in the pool …. life could be better 🙂
Unexpectedly on the way to my house I see a whole warthog family comfortably nibbling the fresh grass of the Lodge. The just felt disturbed when i got bit closer to them. They are somehow very cute but also very shy.
A short swim in the pool was what i needed as the heat it bit different here. You should be careful with the sun, thats why i was wearing the hat and and very high sun protection all the time.
As it is very hot i am trying to relax on one of those cosy and well shaped sunbeds. After a short rest i am ready for lunch. Again the meal is lovely prepared and looks very tasty with fresh salad and some nice spicy add ons and the self made bread. I could eat this every day.
In the afternoon it was even warmer than before and yet I couldn’t resist to try the hammock – as there was still some time left till the next game drive i was relaxing a bit.
There is no light in the room which made the evening more beautiful as all rooms are decorated with many candles. I was happy to have a good Wifi connection just to share my first beautiful impressions with my fans.
DAY 2 – Game Drive 2 – 5 pm
In this second drive my heart would have to go through some attacks . We were on the way as Philip discovered suddenly some traces – lion tracks and still fresh. This meant that the lions had to be very close …. And actually -we found two adult lions very close . Chris maneuvered the Jeep towards them and stopped just in front of the two big lions. I was so impressed….and
… also bit afraid at the same moment as i just saw them in the zoo before and not that close. It is a very special feeling that moment, when you are happy and still a bit scared as they are really huge and i know that they don’t eat plants 🙂
The lions didn’t move that much as they looked bit lazy, and i was happy about this. Even if i was still scared and Chris was really struggling to calm me down – he made a very good job – as you can see i managed to take my camera and do some shots. After few minutes the lions walked away and we followed them to see where they go. Both of them were very tired and one of them fall asleep in few seconds. I was pretty happy when we left and the lions didn’t follow us. Somehow i was expecting all the time, that they turn around and follow us…. guess we were not that interesting.
I was also happy and proud of me to get some pics. I am sorry Chris i was that scared… heheh, next time i will be not 🙂
What a feeling being here – enjoying the sunset, feeling the nature and having a break and a cold beer. Thats a very cool idea with the table and i was always looking forward to our stops as you never know what can happen next… 
Drinking a cold beer, taking pics of that magical surrounding with that silence – that was kind of being free … but the silence didn’t rest for a long time as suddenly some bulls ran at full speed through the bushes kind of screaming as they must have been scared of something. “can be only the hungry lions” went through my head …No. It must have been probably another animal with which we would see later in the evening…. I didn’t know if i should be happy thats not the lions of i have should be scared as it could be something more scary ??? Welcome to the real nature! Sorry i am not able to describe that mixture of feelings – something in-between happiness and heart attack. Ok i am very frightening as i am girl…..
It was already pretty dark on the way back to the lodge as a huge Leopard crossed the car and stopped for a second. What a huge one! And what a beauty too. We have been very happy as we found him very close relaxing after his dinner. He didn’t move that much and wasn’t even confused about the light.
However, he disappeared after a while and were more than happy about this experience. What a day!!! Once in the Lodge I still could not believe what I had experienced today. Actually, I still can not believe it if i see the pics . Happiness and a big big smile was the result of the day!
Day 2 – Game Drive – morning & evening drive
As usually we started the tour with a break for a coffee and enjoyed the sun rising . We were cruising though the park snd enjoying the wild life again.
This is Chris, who was taking care of us every single moment us – that why i was feeling very safe even if was scared. He is such a sympathetic person and told us many interesting stories. I loved to listen to more exciting experiences he already made. If i had to go for a game drive i guess i would only trust him 🙂
It’s impressive to see this wildlife and sometimes the silence can be more scary than a single animal. I guess i should relax more next time, but it was the first time and it was always a big dream for me to make this experience and i was just to excited to relax the way i wish i could do. But thats me 🙂
In the car i was feeling more safe than outside – and taking pictures of everything. We arrived at a small pond where we had another break.
From a short distance we could see elephants coming closer …. about 20 elephants stopped to take a bath or drink the water. They were playing around and one of them came closer.
Meanwhile the sun was setting and it was time go back to the Lodge. The way to the lodge would be the most spectacular experience i would ever do. What happened ? Just few minutes before arriving at the lodge a huge elephant crossed our way. It was very dark and everything happened very quickly. The elephant slowly started to walk towards our car! He started running faster and getting closer and the darkness gave the whole situation more drama. However, Chris responded very quickly and drove back on, but the elephant was still behind us, so Chris turned the car quickly and we escaped. The only question was how do we go back ? – We were waiting few minutes and try it again driving faster this time – but suddenly the elephant crossed the way from the left – Wow – did this really happen ?
What a crazy cool experience!!! I will not forget this day in my whole life as it was the best i could ever make!!! Ok yes i was scared again, but it was amazing at the same time!
No words can describe this experience in the Makumu Game Lodge. Happiness, action, freedom – when i look at those images i still can feel it as i would be there right now… this happens not often (very rare).
Thanks to Chris for being so patient with me all the time, Janet for her lovely and warm way welcoming us. The way both act is full of passion and you will feel that what they do is filled with love and passion all the time. You will feel like being home!
