Der Yosemite National Park liegt in Kalifornien in der Sierra Nevada, rund 300 Kilometer östlich von San Francisco. Obwohl sich der Park insgesamt über weit mehr als 3000 Quadratkilometer erstreckt, konzentrieren sich fast alle Besucher nur auf das so genannte Yosemite Valley. Dieses Tal befindet sich im zentralen Teil des Parks und wird von hellen Granitfelsen eingeschlossen. Anreise und Unterkunft
Für die Anreise empfiehlt sich eine Unterkunft in der Nähe, z.B. in Mariposa und ein Mietwagen. Man kann wohl auch mit einem Zug und einem Bus zum Park gelangen, jedoch dauert die Fahrt hier wohl über 4 Stunden und ist damit deutlich länger als mit dem Auto. Bitte beachtet auch, dass im Winter nicht alle Pässe geöffnet sind. Hier man kann sich immer auf der Website vorher gut informieren.

Der Park hat vier Eingänge:
- Aus dem Nordwesten, z. B. San Francisco/Bay Area über die 120
- aus westlicher Richtung, z. B. Merced über die 140,
- aus Richtung Süden, z. B. Fresno über die 41 oder…
- aus der Sierra im Osten über den Tioga-Pass (120); diese Straße ist aber nur im Sommer (Juni-Oktober) geöffnet.
Insgesamt sollte man für die Fahrt ca. 90 Minuten einplanen und bis Yosemite Valley fahren. Hier befindet sich nämlich das Zentrum mit der Information, einem Restaurant und es ist eigentlich der Ausgangspunkt für alle Wanderungen. Im Yosemite Village befindet sich auch ein großer Parkplatz und von hier sind es nur 5 Minuten zu Fuss bis zum Besucher Zentrum.
Gebühren und Eintritt
An allen Eingängen muss eine Einfahrtsgebühr bezahlt werden, die für 7 Tage zu beliebig vielen Ein- und Ausfahrten berechtigt. Aktuell liegt der Preis für einen PKW bei $30. Ihr könnt diesen direkt bei der Durchfahrt erwerben. Darüber hinaus sind für Wanderungen in die Wildnis des Parks sogenannte wilderness permits erforderlich, diese sind kostenlos an den Eingängen des Parks, bzw. außerhalb der Saison im Besucherzentrum in Yosemite Village erhältlich. Obligatorisch sind beispielsweise spezielle bärensichere Lebensmittelbehälter die ggf. ausgeliehen werden können. Als Alternative bietet sich noch der America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass an, der ein Jahr gilt und zum Besuch sämtlicher US-amerikanischer Nationalparks berechtigt und 80 US$ kostet. IM Park könnt ihr dann einen kostenlosen Shuttle zu vielen Stationen nutzen. Die Stationen sind auf der Karte (diese bekommt ihr im Visitors Center) gut eingezeichnet und mit wichtigen Informationen zu jeweiligen Stationen erklärt.

Sehenswürdigkeiten im Park
Der Park ist wie oben erwähnt sehr groß und man sollte daher für die meisten Sehenswürdigkeiten viel Zeit mitbringen. Empfehlenswert sind daher 3-4 Tage Aufenthalt entweder im Park selbst (hier gibt es einige wenige Unterkünfte) oder in der nächst gelegenen Stadt, wie z.B. Mariposa. Die Karte aus dem Visitors Center (Im Yosemite Village) ist sehr hilfreich und die Park Ranger helfen euch ebenfalls mit der optimalen Route. TIPP: Genügend Wasser und feste Wanderschuhe sind von Vorteil. Es gibt im Park Stationen, an denen ihr eurer Trinkwasser auffüllen könnt, aber die Wege dahin sind meist länger.
- El Capitan – Der insgesamt 2307 m hohe Granitfelsen ragt steil aus dem Yosemite Valley empor. Seine über 1000 m senkrechte Felswand ist Amerikas beliebteste Kletterstrecke.
- Glacier Point – Gigantischer Aussichtspunkt auf einer Berghöhe. Entweder mit dem Auto zu erreichen oder aber auf dem so genannten 4-Mile-Trail zu Fuß. Dieser anstrengende Weg führt nach ca. 3 – 5 Stunden Wanderung direkt zum Aussichtspunkt am Glacier Point und lässt die Aussicht angesichts der zurückgelegten Höhenmeter noch schöner erscheinen. Die Mühe lohnt sich!
- Tioga Pass – Diese im Norden des Parks liegende Passstraße ist wohl die schönste mit dem Auto erreichbare Strecke des Nationalparks. Für die 55 Meilen lange Strecke sollte man mit Rückweg einen ganzen Tag einplanen. Die Straße ist nur im Sommer befahrbar und man sollte berücksichtigen, dass die Strecke bis auf 3.000 m ansteigt, was durchaus zu gesundheitlichen Problemen führen kann.

- Yosemite Falls – Nordamerikas höchste Wasserfall im Yosemite Valley, allerdings im Herbst häufig ausgetrocknet und dann nicht wirklich sehenswert.
- Yosemite Village – Das Besucherzentrum befindet sich in dieser kleinen Touristenstadt im zentral gelegenen Yosemite Valley. Sie erhalten dort Informationen über Sehenswürdigkeiten, Geschichte, Tiere, Pflanzen und Geologie des Parks.
- Mirror Lake – Ein saisonaler See, in dem sich die umliegende Bergwelt spiegelt. Ein Besuch lohnt sich allerdings nur im Frühjahr oder eventuell noch im Frühsommer, da er ansonsten ausgetrocknet ist.
- Vernal Falls und Nevada Falls – Diese beiden Wasserfälle sind ein tolles Ziel für eine nicht allzu anstrengende Tageswanderung, bei der man immer wieder schöne Ausblicke genießen kann. Für den Aufstieg empfiehlt sich der Mist-Trail (teilweise recht steil, Granitstufen), für den Rückweg der etwas längere aber flachere John-Muir-Trail.

Tiere und Gefahren im Park
Was wäre ein National Park ohne Tiere ? Ihr werden überall Warnschilder und Hinweise auf Bären finden. Egal welchen Tieren ihr begegnet, es ist strengestens untersagt diese zu füttern und im ersten Schritt auch Essensreste liegen zu lassen.
- Bären: Im Nationalpark gibt es viele Schwarzbären, die direkt für den Menschen nicht gefährlich sind. Allerdings gehen die Tiere mit großer Zerstörungskraft auf Futtersuche und können dabei Zelte zerfetzen und auch verschlossenen Autos schwere Schäden zufügen. Daher sind im Nationalpark alle Lebensmittelvorräte in speziellen Vorratsbehältern zu lagern (Diese sind verschliessbar und fest installiert, so dass die Bären an das Essen nicht rankommen) Ansonsten sind kleine transportable Behälter ausleihbar.
- Berglöwen: Als mountain lion werden gemeinhin die im Nationalpark vorkommenden Pumas bzw. Panther bezeichnet. Im Falle einer solchen seltenen Begegnung stehen bleiben und langsam den Rückzug antreten, ggf. laut schreien und Lärm machen, nicht schnell weglaufen – im Regelfall werden Menschen jedoch nicht angefallen.
- Waldbrände: Im Herbst gibt es durch die lang andauernde Trockenheit im Sommer meist eine sehr hohe Waldbrandgefahr. Zu unterscheiden von solchen ungeplanten Feuern, sind die geplanten Feuer, die von den Rangern jedes Jahr in bestimmten wechselnden Gebieten entzündet werden. Über solche Feuer und den damit verbunden Nutzen für die Natur wird man überall informiert, ggf. sind dadurch zeitweise bestimmte Wanderwege gesperrt.
Beste Reisezeit für den Besuch
Der Yosemite-Nationalpark ist für seine Besucher rund um das Jahr geöffnet. Damit kann meine die beste Reisezeit fast ausschliessen, den jeder hat einen anderen Fokus. Das Frühjahr etwa bietet sich für alle Naturliebhaber an, die Wasserfälle lieben. Im April und Mai nach der Schneeschmelze tosen sie am eindrucksvollsten in die Tiefe. Tagsüber kann es in diesen Monaten durchaus schon warm sein. Dennoch ist der eine oder andere überraschende Schneesturm auch noch möglich und die Straßen zu den Gletschern könnten noch gesperrt sein. Im Juni beginnt die Hauptsaison im Park, die sich bis in den September hineinzieht. In dieser Zeit sind in aller Regel sämtliche Straßen und Pässe geöffnet. Man sollte sich genau überlegen was man sehen möchte und auch schauen, wo die Reise danach hingeht ? Möchte man zurück nach San Francisco oder in Richtung Mammoth Lakes zum Ski Urlaub ? Der Oktober garantiert fast immer noch die Passierbarkeit aller Straßen, aber die Besucherzahlen nehmen dann schon drastisch ab und so könnt man vielleicht hier für den ersten Besuch diesen Zeitrau wählen.
Fazit und Tipps
Auf einer möglichen Route durch Kalifornien darf der Yosemite National Park nicht fehlen. Informiert euch ungebeugt vorher über die Reisemonate und was euch erwartet (Schnee, wenig Wasser und damit fehlende Wasserfälle usw.) Eine Reise durch Amerika oder auch Kanada kann lang werden und es ist gar nicht so einfach die besten Ziele selbst zu organisieren.
